Nipple Discharge
Nipple discharge is a fairly common complaint.
In the majority of cases it is insignificant as it is usual for nipples to produce small
amount of colorless /yellowish discharge. Usually not seen but, if it builds up
could be noticed.
We differentiate between: Blood stained or Non-blood stained
Also: Spontaneous or Non Spontaneous

- – History in details including Blood stained or not and spontaneous or not.
– Examination : noticing any Lumps, deformity and the color of discharge.
– Mammogram for the over 35 years. Ultrasound for under 35
– Further investigations are according to findings on examination.
– Sending a swab of the discharge for microscopic examination is advised by
many, though rarely helpful. I don’t request.

– Often all it needs is assurance.
– If Mammogram is abnormal, treat according to finding.
– If a palpable lump, treat accordingly.
– If All investigations are normal but Blood stained, I do recommend excision
of the duct producing blood or all the milk ducts.
– If the discharge is profuse or socially embarrassing, I do recommend
excision of the milk ducts.
– Cessation of smoking is advised.
